ABSTRACT

To better understand how public transport use varied during the first year of COVID-19, we define and measure travel behavior resilience. With trip records between November 2019 and September 2020 in Kunming, China, we identify people who relied on traveling by subway both before and after the first pandemic wave. We investigate whether and how travelers recover to their pre-pandemic mobility level. We find that public transport use recovered slowly, as urban mobility is a result of urban functionality, transport supply, social context, and inter-personal differences. In general, urban mobility represents a strengthened revisiting tendency during COVID-19, as individual's trips occur within a more limited space. We confirm that travel behavior resilience differs by groups. Commuters recover travel frequency and length, while older people decrease frequency but retain activity space. The study suggests that policymakers take group heterogeneity and travel behavior resilience into account for transport management and city restoration.

ABSTRACT

Introduction/Objective COVID-19 vaccine-related lymphadenopathy, particularly in the ipsilateral axilla, is a relatively well-known side effect of mRNA vaccines with many reports in radiology, but less is known regarding histopathology and additional sites of lymphadenopathy, as well as other localized potential vaccine-related mass manifestations. In addition to a case of minimal change disease, we report two cases here with associated systemic and local pathologic changes related to COVID-19 vaccination. Methods/Case Report In case #1, a 17-year-old male presented with a 2.4 cm left postauricular mass. He had originally noticed the mass six months prior and thought that it had recently been growing. The mass was soft, nonfluctuant, and nontender to palpation. Given the risk of malignancy, a resection was performed. Histology showed an enlarged lymph node composed of mixed inflammatory cell components consistent with lymphoid hyperplasia and no evidence of malignancy. On further chart review, the patient had received his second COVID-19 vaccination just prior to noticing the mass enlarging. A SARS-CoV-2 Anti-Spike IgG assay was as high as 24,396 AU/ml, suggesting that this benign lymphadenopathy was most likely related to his vaccination. For case #2, a 47-year-old male developed a painless right deltoid mass shortly after receiving his vaccination at the same area that subsequently increased in size over seven months to 6.5 cm. Imaging showed a heterogeneous mass within the deltoid muscle concerning for malignancy and a biopsy was performed. Sections showed wavy, bland spindle cells with nuclei staining diffusely positive for beta-catenin, consistent with fibromatosis at his vaccination site. Results (if a Case Study enter NA) NA. Conclusion In summary, these case reports show potential systemic and local reactive effects in response to COVID-19 vaccination.

ABSTRACT

Air-borne pollutants in particulate matter (PM) form, produced either physically during industrial processes or certain biological routes, have posed a great threat to human health. Particularly during the current COVID-19 pandemic, effective filtration of the virus is an urgent matter worldwide. In this review, we first introduce some fundamentals about PM, including its source and classification, filtration mechanisms, and evaluation parameters. Advanced filtration materials and their functions are then summarized, among which polymers and MOFs are discussed in detail together with their antibacterial performance. The discussion on the application is divided into end-of-pipe treatment and source control. Finally, we conclude this review with our prospective view on future research in this area. ABSTRACT

Traditionally, most investment tools used to predict stocks are based on quantitative variables, such as finance and capital flow. With the widespread impact of the Internet, investors and investment institutions designing investment strategies are also referring to online comments and discussions. However, multiple information sources, along with uncertainties accompanying international political and economic events and the recent pandemic, have left investors concerned about information interpretation approaches that could aid investment decision-making. To this end, this study proposes a method that combines social media sentiment, genetic algorithm (GA), and deep learning to predict changes in stock prices. First, it employs a hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) combined with machine learning to identify chip-based indicators closely related to fluctuations in stock prices and then uses them as input for long short-term memory (LSTM) to establish a prediction model. Next, this study proposes five sentiment variables to analyze PTT social media on TSMC's stock price and performs a grey relational analysis (GRA) to identify the sentiment variables most closely related to stock price fluctuations. The sentiment variables are then combined with the selected chip-based indicators as input to build the LSTM prediction model. To improve the efficiency of the LSTM analysis, this study applies the Taguchi method to optimize the hyper-parameters. The results show that the proposed method of using HGA-screened chip-based variables and social media sentiment variables as input to establish an LSTM prediction model can effectively improve the prediction accuracy of stock price fluctuations.

ABSTRACT

Background/Aims: The global pandemic of COVID-19 has caused tremendous loss of human life since 2019. Vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is one of the best policies to control the pandemic. The vaccination efficacy in Taiwanese patients with different comorbidities is elusive and to be explored. Method(s): Uninfected subjects who received 3-doses of mRNA vaccines (Moderna, BioNTech), non-replicating viral vector-based vaccines (AstraZeneca, AZ) or protein subunit vaccines (Medigen COVID-19 vaccine, MVC) were prospectively enrolled. SARSCoV2- IgG spike antibody level was determined (Abbott [SARS-CoV- 2 IgG II]) within 3 months after the last dose of vaccination. Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) was applied to disclose the association of vaccine titer and underlying comorbidities. Result(s): A total of 824 subjects were enrolled in the current study. The mean age was 58.9 years and males accounted for 48.7% of the population. The proportion of CCI with 0-1, 2-3 and>4 was 52.8% (n = 435), 31.3% (n = 258) and 15.9% (n = 131), respectively. The most commonly used vaccination combination was AZ-AZ-Moderna (39.2%), followed by Moderna-Moderna-Moderna (27.8%) and AZAZ- BioNTech (14.7%), respectively. The mean vaccination titer was 3.11 log BAU/mL after a median 48 days of the 3rd dose. Subjects of male gender, lower body mass index, chronic kidney disease, higher CCI, and receiving AZ-AZ based vaccination were likely to have a lower titer of antibody. There was a decreasing trend of antibody titer with the increase of CCT (trend P<0.001). Linear regression analysis revealed that AZ-AZ-based vaccination (beta: 0.341, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 0.144, 0.21, P<0.001) and higher CCI (beta: - 0.055, CI: - 0.096, - 0.014, P = 0.009) independently correlated with low IgG spike antibody levels. Conclusion(s): Patients with more comorbidities had a poor response to 3 doses of COVID-19 vaccination. Further studies are warranted to clarify the efficacy of booster vaccination in the population. The vaccine titer did not differ between patient with or without chronic liver disease.

ABSTRACT

Background Primary healthcare is the first line of defense for the containment of COVID-19 pandemic. Primary healthcare has been studied extensively by academic circles in various countries during the pandemic,but the focuses vary across these studies due to differences in primary healthcare systems in different countries. Objective To understand the advances,hotspots,trends and differences of primary care-related research at home and abroad during the COVID-19 epidemic,and to provide a reference for further research in this field. Methods Primary healthcare-related studies published during the COVID-19 pandemic(between January 1,2020 and June 30,2022)were searched in databases of CNKI and Web of Science Core Collection on July 5,2022,and 282 from the former database and 1 755 from the latter were included. CiteSpace was used for visualization analysis to provide a graphic visualization of co-occurrence networks of authors,keywords and keywords clusters,to perform a timeline analysis,and to detect keywords with bursts. Results The number of publications in China grew fast at the beginning of the pandemic,then the growth gradually decreased,and tended to level off at the late stage. In contrast,relevant research started later in foreign countries,but the number of relevant publications maintained high-speed growth as of the study time. The major author cooperation forms were inter-small teams cooperation and inter-individual cooperation,and no large-scale inter-team cooperation was found. The hotspots of domestic research focus on the systems,the exploration of mechanisms and management practices related to pandemic prevention and control,while international research focuses on changes in healthcare-seeking patterns and the satisfaction of patients' medical needs under the influence of the pandemic. Psychological problems related to the pandemic were concerned by both domestic and international research. Conclusion Domestic and foreign studies have similarities and different focuses. To continuous refine and diversify domestic research,it is suggested to learn international experience,pay attention to the construction of relevant research forces,improve the knowledge system in this field,and actively use information technology to improve the primary care system amid the pandemic. © 2023 Chinese General Practice. ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of SARS-CoV-2 membrane protein on the processing of the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of the mRNA precursor (pre-mRNA) in host cells. Methods Based on the cell model of human lung epithelial cells A549, over-expression of the SARS-CoV-2 membrane protein was performed. The RNA-Seq high-throughput sequencing technique and bioinformatics methods was employed to analyze the systematic characterization of alternative polyadenylation (APA) events in host cells. Genes with significant APA events were uploaded to the Metascape database for functional enrichment analysis. In addition, alternative 3'UTR length of genes with APA events was verified by RT-qPCR. Then the target protein expression level was detected by Western blot. Results A total of 813 genes that were significant dynamic APA events in host cells that over-expressed SARS-CoV-2 membrane protein. These genes were enriched in cell biologicial processes such as the mitotic cell cycle and regulation of cellular response to stress. We further screened AKT1, which encodes a critical regulator involved in the above biological process, showing a 3'UTR lengthening in IGV software. RT-qPCR verified the trend of 3'UTR length changes of AKT1. Western blot showed the increased level of phosphorylated AKT1 protein in over-expressed group of M protein. Conclusion SARS-CoV-2 membrane protein potentially affects the 3' processing of host pre-mRNAs. AKT1, which is involved in a variety of viral biological processes, with 3'UTR lengthening, and its protein function was activated intracellularly. © 2022 Institute of Biophysics,Chinese Academy of Sciences. ABSTRACT

Objective: To identify which induced the symptoms/signs and laboratory abnormal findings occurred in patients with novel coronavirus pneumonia, by disease itself or by ribavirin and interferon-alpha treatments, through mining the adverse events (AEs) signals of the 2 antivirus agents. Method(s): According to the symptoms/signs and laboratory abnormal findings of novel coronavirus pneumonia mentioned in the literature and "Diagnosis and Treatment scheme of Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (trial version 5)", AEs in this study were selected. Related data were collected from the U.S. FDA Adverse Events Reporting System (FARES) from Jan 1, 2004 to Dec 31, 2019, and the reporting odds ratio (ROR) method was used for signals detection for the above-mentioned 2 drugs. Result(s): A total of 7 582 463 AEs related to drugs were reported in the FAERS database, of which 31 775 related to ribavirin and 2 345 related to interferon-alpha. The results showed that AEs related to ribavirin in respiratory, thoracic, and mediastinal disorders were nasal congestion, cough, laryngeal pain, pharyngeal oedema, productive cough, and dyspnoea;AEs related to interferon-alpha were laryngeal pain and haemoptysis. In other system organ class, AEs related to above 2 drugs were pyrexia, feeling cold, pyrexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, arthralgia, myalgia, and rash. AEs of laboratory abnormal results related to ribavirin were white blood cell/platelet count decrease and aspartate/alanine aminotransferase increase;AEs related to interferon-alpha were white blood cell/platelet count decrease, aspartate/alanine aminotransferase increase, and lymphocyte count decrease. Conclusion(s): Some AEs induced by ribavirin and interferon-alpha were similar to symptoms/signs and laboratory abnormal findings of novel coronavirus pneumonia, which should be distinguished in the clinical practice.Copyright © 2020 by the Chinese Medical Association.

ABSTRACT

The global COVID-19 health pandemic caused major interruptions to educational assessment systems, partially due to shifts to remote learning environments, entering the post-COVID educational world into one that is more open to heterogeneity in instructional and assessment modes for secondary students. In addition, in 2020, educational inequities were brought to the forefront of social conscience. The purpose of this study is to empirically explore how contextual (i.e., school-level) race and economic factors may relate to and explain measurement challenges that can arise during shifts to remote learning. We fit a series of multilevel models to explore school-level factors in assessment data alongside psychometric problems of differential item functioning and person fit in classroom assessment measurement models. Our results demonstrate ways in which our project's classroom assessments were impacted by shifts to remote learning, emphasizing the importance of researchers and practitioners evaluating such concerns when seeking validity evidence for interpretation of classroom assessment data. © 2023 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

ABSTRACT

The study presents qualitative research on university students' online learning experience process at the higher education level. It used a grounded theory through semi-structured in-depth interviews with 25 university students for framing and structuring the paradigm model of university students' online learning experiences. A paradigm model illustrating this developmental process is presented, which includes the casual and contextual conditions that caused and evolved the central phenomenon for their online learning, the strategies used by the students to overcome external/internal disturbances in continuing their learning process, the conditions that helped/hindered those strategies, and the consequences. Finally, the following meaning units were discovered through the preceding paradigm model. The students started learning with a negative impression of unfamiliar learning methods such as online learning, but over time, they improved their self-management abilities and gained a broader understanding of self-discipline. In the midst of this, competence in digital literacy according to generational differences was also discovered as one of the factors affecting learning, forming a virtual community, and increasing personal learning through online interaction. Finally, the implications of the overall learning ecology for the future role of online learning were also considered. Based on this analysis of students' online learning experiences, the direction for online learning was suggested. Copyright © 2023 Huang and Yoon.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the occurrence and risk factors of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) in patients with novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19). Method(s): The medical records of patients with COVID-19 who were discharged from the First Hospital of Changsha from January 15 to March 7, 2020 were collected and the patients were divided into the DILI group and the non-DILI group based on DILI diagnostic criteria. Basic information of patients in the 2 groups including gender, age, underlying diseases, classification of COVID-19, liver function test results on admission and after medication, drug use, time to DILI onset after medication, and treatments and outcomes of DILI were recorded and compared. The incidence of DILI in patients with COVID-19 was calculated, and the factors whose P<0.05 in inter-group comparison were included in the multivariate logistic regression analysis to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and95% confidence interval (CI). Result(s): A total of 203 discharged patients with COVID-19 met the inclusion criteria. Of them, 36 patients developed DILI, the incidence was 17.73%. Between the DILI group and the non-DILI group (167 patients), the differences were statistically significant in gender distribution, proportion of patients with underlying diseases such as hypertension, fatty liver, and cholelithiasis, clinical classification of COVID-19, and the kinds of drug use (P<0.05 for all), but not statistically significant in levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and total bilirubin (TBil) on admission (P>0.05 for all). The levels of ALT and AST in patients in the DILI group after medication were higher than those before medication, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.001 for all). The median time for time to DILI onset after medication was 8 (6, 11) days and none of the patients had obvious clinical signs and symptoms. After the occurrence of DILI, 16 patients stopped the suspicious drugs and received liver-protective treatments, 6 patients only stopped the suspicious drug without additional treatments, and 14 patients received liver-protective treatments without drug withdrawal. Among the 36 patients in the DILI group, liver function were improved in 34 patients but did not returned to normal in 2 patients when they were discharged from the hospital. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that male (OR=3.939, 95%CI: 1.426-10.883, P=0.008), being severe and critical in clinical classification (OR=6.433, 95%CI: 2.411-17.162, P<0.001), fatty liver (OR=3.815, 95%CI: 1.298-11.215, P=0.015), cholelithiasis (OR=16.347, 95%CI: 1.267-210.990, P=0.032), and the kinds of drug use >8 (OR=10.181, 95%CI: 3.606-28.744, P<0.001) were the independent risk factors of DILI in patients with COVID-19. Conclusion(s): The incidence of DILI in COVID-19 patients discharged from the First Hospital of Changsha is 17.73%. Male, being severe and critical in clinical classification of COVID-19, fatty liver, cholelithiasis, and the kinds of drug use >8 are the independent risk factors for DILI patients with COVID-19.Copyright © 2020 by the Chinese Medical Association.

ABSTRACT

Trust is essential in the digital world. It is a critical task to build digital trust for the ongoing digital engineering transformation. Aiming at developing a blockchain-based digital trust mechanism for Cloud Manufacturing or Manufacturing-as-a-Service (MaaS), in this paper, we use the manufacturing of low dead space (LDS) medical syringes through Cloud Manufacturing as a motivating scenario to develop a basic framework. To meet the need of optimally saving COVID-19 vaccine doses to save more lives, the medical device manufacturing community needs to make a swift move to meet the surged need for LDS syringes. Cloud Manufacturing is a form of emerging Digital Manufacturing facilitated with Cloud/Edge Computing, the Internet of Things, and other digital technologies. Cloud manufacturing allows quickly establishing a digital virtual enterprise that pools together various manufacturing resources worldwide to meet the surged needs of products and save cost and time. Trusting the product quality and safety is a significant challenge when using Cloud Manufacturing to manufacture the products. This paper proposes a schema of blockchain-based digital trust mechanisms with examples of using Cloud Manufacturing of medical LDS syringes for the urgent needs of catering COVID-19 vaccination. © 2023 - The authors. ABSTRACT

Background: Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) may be an effective, safe, and affordable treatment for Covid-19 that can be used in selected patients. However, more evidence on its association when it is used in different stages of the disease with clinical outcomes is required. This observational study investigates the association between treatment with HCQ and mortality in patients with Covid-19. Method(s): The data from 6217 patients who died or were discharged from 24 Spanish hospitals were analyzed. Propensity matching scores (PMS) were used. Result(s): 5094 patients received HCQ. Death was recorded for 17.5% of those who had HCQ and 34.1% of those who did not have it. Mortality was lower for those who had HCQ, OR=0.41 (95% CI=0.34-0.48). The PMS analysis also showed that mortality was lower for those receiving HCQ, OR=0.47 (95%CI=0.36-0.62). PMS analysis for categories revealed an association between HCQ and lowered mortality for patients over 65 years of age, with a past medical history of hypertension, for those who were diagnosed during admission with sepsis related organ failure or pneumonia, and for those with lymphocytopenia, raised troponin, LDH, ferritin and D-dimer. No increase in mortality associated with HCQ was observed in any category of any of the variables investigated. Conclusion(s): HCQ could be associated with lower mortality for older patients, those with more severe disease and raised inflammatory markers. Further RCTs, observational studies, and summaries of both types of evidence on this topic are necessary to select the precise profile of patients that may benefit from HCQ.Copyright © 2023 Bentham Science Publishers.

ABSTRACT

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has serious consequences on global public health and social development. The binding of receptor binding domain (RBD) of spike protein to angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) on the surface of SARS-CoV-2 host cell initiates the infection progress. Spike and ACE2 are both glycoproteins, the impact of glycosylation on protein structures and protein-protein interactions remains largely elusive. Characterizing the structural and dynamics of protein-protein binding progress will improve mechanism understanding of viral infection and facilitate targeted drug design. Structural mass spectrometry (MS) method is widely used in protein structural studies, providing complementary information to conventional biophysical methods, such as X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Native mass spectrometry (native MS) is an emerging technology that enables the study of intact protein, non-covalent protein-protein, and protein-ligand complexes in their biological state, which can provide structural stability, binding stoichiometry, and spatial arrangement information. Here, native MS was used to examine the interaction between RBD and ACE2 as well as the impact of deglycosylation on the interaction stability of the RBD-ACE2 complex. The results revealed that both RBD and ACE2 are highly glycosylated, ACE2 presents as a dimer while RBD as a monomer, and they form a (RBD-ACE2)2 complex. The conditions of using PNGasc F to remove the N-glycan were optimized. At least two Oglycans including NcuAc(2) and GalNAcC 1) Gal( 1) NcuAc(2) or GlcNAcd ) Gal(l) NeuAc(2) were observed for the N-glycan removed RBD. Furthermore, the stability of the complexes formed by glycosylated and deglycosylated RBD with ACE2 was compared, and the results showed that the removal of N-glycan significantly drops the interaction stability of the RBD-ACE2 complex. Therefore, we recommend that glycosyla-tion should not be removed for structural and functional studies. Additional glycosyla-tion, structural and dynamics studies on Spike (including separated RBD) and ACE2 complexes would help us to understand the process of viral infection, advance drug design and vaccine developments. Nowadays, a comprehensive MS-based toolbox has been developed for the analysis of protein structure, function, and dynamics, including hydrogen-deuterium exchange MS (HDX-MS), native top-down (nTD) MS, cross-linking MS (XL-MS), and covalent labelling MS (CL-MS), etc. Through integrating structural MS methods, more detailed and comprehensive structural information about glycoproteins and their complexes will be uncovered. © 2022 Chinese Society for Mass Spectrometry. At least two Oglycans including NcuAc(2) and GalNAcC 1) Gal( 1) NcuAc(2) or GlcNAcd ) Gal(l) NeuAc(2) were observed for the N-glycan removed RBD. Furthermore, the stability of the complexes formed by glycosylated and deglycosylated RBD with ACE2 was compared, and the results showed that the removal of N-glycan significantly drops the interaction stability of the RBD-ACE2 complex. Therefore, we recommend that glycosyla-tion should not be removed for structural and functional studies. Additional glycosyla-tion, structural and dynamics studies on Spike (including separated RBD) and ACE2 complexes would help us to understand the process of viral infection, advance drug design and vaccine developments. Nowadays, a comprehensive MS-based toolbox has been developed for the analysis of protein structure, function, and dynamics, including hydrogen-deuterium exchange MS (HDX-MS), native top-down (nTD) MS, cross-linking MS (XL-MS), and covalent labelling MS (CL-MS), etc. Through integrating structural MS methods, more detailed and comprehensive structural information about glycoproteins and their complexes will be uncovered. © 2022 Chinese Society for Mass Spectrometry. ABSTRACT

This study explores the strategic issues related to the mobile learning quality in Taiwanese higher education during the COVID-19 pandemics. While much previous study determined the factors affecting mobile learning quality, seldom research works discussed the influence weights of the elements and their interrelations in the higher education through a comprehensive view. Hence, the purpose of this research is to explore the interrelationships and feedback between the factors affecting mobile learning quality via a combined multiple attribute decision-making (MADM) method, which will include decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL), and DEMATEL-based ANP (DANP) approaches. This recommended approach can offer guidance to prioritize the influence elements in the enhancement plans for mobile learning quality. This research uses the recommended approach in the higher education in Taiwan as an empirical study during COVID-19. These findings results state which service quality needs to be enhanced primarily, and learning ability is the most important factor influencing mobile learning quality during COVID-19. Furthermore, the results show that system quality perspective has the strongest impact on the relations and it also has an important effect on other perspectives. The results can provide guidance on assigning resources of limit to improve this mobile learning quality in Taiwanese higher education in the COVID-19 pandemics. © 2023 World Scientific Publishing Company.

ABSTRACT

Financial well-being is a key component of quality of life and overall well-being and is likely to affect other aspects of quality of life, such as health and health care. The COVID-19 pandemic presents an immense crisis of financial well-being among low-income entrepreneurs and has left many small-scale entrepreneurs financially fragile. We argue that promoting the financial capability of low-income entrepreneurs is effective in protecting their financial well-being from a crisis. To examine the association between financial capability and the financial well-being of low-income entrepreneurs, we use the 2016 National Financial Well-Being Survey, which provides the latest and comprehensive measurement of financial capability, including financial knowledge, financial skills, and access to financial products and services. Our analyses show that, compared to their higher-income counterparts, low-income entrepreneurs have statistically lower levels of financial well-being, financial knowledge, financial skills, and access to mainstream financial products;they also have a statistically higher risk of using high-fee alternative financial products. In addition, low-income entrepreneurs have larger barriers to accessing mainstream financial products than low-income non-entrepreneurs. The results indicate that financial capability plays a significant role in promoting the financial well-being of low-income entrepreneurs. © 2023 by the authors.
